Central Hornsey and District Allotments and Horticultural Society
Dear All,
As you know the Trading Sheds on our two allotment sites are managed by the Central
Hornsey and District Allotment and Horticultural Society (CHADAHS). CHADAHS is
currently doing a survey of all allotment holders and our external
(non-allotment) members of CHADAHS to learn more about what you want from the
trading shed. For those of you who are connected to the internet it is very
easy for you to respond to the questions. Just
and then answer the questions in the brief survey.
If you would like a paper copy of the survey, please pick one up from your
site's Trading Shed when it is open on Sunday or let Jill Pack (Chair of
CHADAHS) know what your plot number is and she will make sure a
copy gets to you (email: chair@chadahs.org.uk).
Thanks very much for taking part,
About CHADAHS
CHADAHS is a society of local allotment holders and gardeners.
Allotment holders come mainly from the sites
at
Shepherds
Hill
and
Alexandra
Palace.
Gardeners come
from across the
surrounding
area of
the
borough
of
Haringey! The society
is managed
by
an
elected
committee.
Membership is only £2 per year,
and allows you to buy goods from the trading
sheds,
free
entry
into
our
Summer Show, and
ensures you will
hear about
events such
as our
plant
sale and
Summer
trip. You DO NOT
have to be
an
allotment holder to join
the
society
or
enter
the show! It's easy
to join - just ask
at
our
trading sheds or
phone or
send us an
email
(see
Contacts).
What are the Benefits to Society Members?
All Society Members are able to purchase a wide variety
of
goods,
many
of
which
are difficult to obtain
elsewhere (they're aimed at the horticultural trade),
and all of
which
are
very
competitively
priced.
For several years now, we've organised a bulk order of a
huge range of
around 40 different varieties of seed
potatoes, a far wider choice than
most commercial
suppliers, even specialist ones.
An important item for many growers is 'green manure'
seeds. Green manures are crops
which you plant into empty ground, either summer- or winter-growing, which stop
nutrients from washing away,
fix nitrogen (depending on species), help break up the soil, and
finally, are dug in to fertilise and add organic
matter to your soil. Through bulk purchasing, our prices
are very low compared with
commercial packets, which removes a significant cost barrier. This year, we
plan to stock Winter
Tares (winter hardy, nitrogen fixing), Winter Grazing Rye (winter hardy, dense
roots, nitrogent holding), and Phacelia (spring-summer planting, quick growing,
quick bulk, flowers
attract bees).
